A Beginner’s Guide to Wig Wearing for Hair Loss

0

The thought of wearing your first wig might be a little daunting, and you may worry that people will notice it or that it won’t feel comfortable on your head.

While it’s not unusual to have concerns about wearing a wig when you’ve lost some, or all, of your hair, once you’ve visited a wig store and tried on some human hair wigs, you’ll soon feel your confidence come back, and your worries dissipate.

To help you get accustomed to wig wearing, here’s a short beginner’s guide:

Different types of wigs

The right wig can transform your experience. Here are two of the most popular types being worn today:

· The full lace

With a base made out of lace that covers the whole head, full lace wigs give you the most options for versatile styling. You can literally part your hair wherever you want, sport an updo, tie it back, or simply let it cascade over your shoulders!

· The lace front

With lace along the front of the hairline, as opposed to the whole head, lace front wigs afford the wearer a hairline that’s seamless and looks entirely natural.

Different types of hair

Basically, you can choose between a human hair wig or a synthetic one. As you might imagine, a human hair wig most closely resembles natural hair and therefore can be expected to behave in a similar manner and look similar in appearance. While synthetic wigs don’t look or feel as natural, they’re not as expensive and can be a great option for first-time wig wearers on a tight budget.

Wearing a wig cap

While you may not wish, or need, to wear a wig cap, they can be great for protecting your scalp and, ultimately, ensuring that your wig sits comfortably and securely on your head. Some do find them a little hot to wear, though, so you may wish to experiment with wearing one before deciding to buy one.

How best to put on your wig

If you’re going to be wearing a wig cap to help keep your wig in place, you should apply that before following these steps:

·        Begin by holding the wig at the nape (or back), so that you can position it more easily on your head.

·        Tilt your head forward a little.

·        Align the front edge of the wig with your hairline.

·        Guide the wig gently over your head, allowing it to settle on top of your head until it feels comfortable and secure, and looks natural.

Making sure the wig is comfortable and looks natural

Once your wig is on, take time to make any necessary adjustments, such as the following:

·        For a wig with ear tabs, line them up with your ears to get an even placement.

·        Move the wig until it rests without slipping or bunching at the base of your neck.

·        Adjust the straps or hooks found inside the wig for a truly snug fit.

Keeping the wig in place

There are some quick and easy, glueless methods that can help keep virgin European hair wigs safely in place all day, which include grip caps and grip bands. Some wigs also come with an adjustable wig strap, or you can choose to have one fitted.

For the perfect wig that looks just as you want it, you may wish to visit your favorite stylist so that they can trim the wig a little, or shape it so that it better frames your face.

Once you’ve found a wig that’s comfortable, looks natural, and feels snug and secure, you’ll wonder what you were ever worried about!
